We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the group of staff scientist Dr. Eduardo Bañados at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany. The group, part of the Galaxies and Cosmology Department, studies the first billion years of the Universe, discovering and characterising the earliest quasars and their cosmic environments with facilities spanning the electromagnetic spectrum.

The successful candidate will play a key role in exploiting PRISM-DAWN, a JWST Cycle 5 NIRSpec IFU program (GO 10406, PIs Bañados & Wolf) targeting the majority of the known z>7 quasar population, most of them recent Euclid discoveries (program details). Data delivery begins at the end of 2026, and the postdoc will contribute to the reduction, analysis, and publication of this dataset, characterising extended kpc-scale emission, black hole masses, and the diversity of quasar environments at cosmic dawn. The postdoc is expected to become an active member of the Quasar Work Package within the Euclid Primaeval Universe Science Working Group.

In addition, the candidate will take a main role in the preparation, observation, and data reduction of Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) data as part of the group's Euclid quasar search team, with roughly five nights per semester secured for the duration of the appointment.

This is a three-year, full-time position: two years are funded by the German Space Agency (DLR) specifically to support the exploitation of JWST program PRISM-DAWN (Cycle 5, GO 10406).

Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy or a closely related field. Experience with integral field spectroscopy and/or near-infrared spectroscopy would be an asset, although not required.

Remuneration will follow the German public-sector pay scale (TVöD) and will depend on qualifications and experience.
