Short description of the group/project/topic of research
We seek to fill a postdoctoral position in the research group on Small-scale Dynamics in Turbulence led by Dr. Florencia Falkinhoff.
We are an international research institute conducting both experimental and theoretical fundamental scientific research. We are part of the Göttingen Campus, a collaboration between the university and non-university research institutions. The Laboratory for Fluid Physics, Pattern Formation and Biocomplexity (LFPB), headed by Prof. Dr. Eberhard Bodenschatz, fosters a stimulating international research environment on active complex systems ranging from Biophysics to Fluid Dynamics.
The research
Understanding turbulent flows is still one of the main open problems in physics. These issues include predicting turbulent flows and resolving turbulence at the smallest scales. The Variable Density Turbulence Tunnel (VDTT) at the MPI-DS is an experimental facility that allows us to address these issues. In particular, we can use the wind tunnel’s highly tunable active grid to study the predictability of turbulent flows. This has consequences for technology, such as weather forecasting and wind farm efficiency. The successful interdisciplinary candidate will conduct hot-wire experiments at the VDTT and relate the results to other areas of fluid physics, such as atmospheric physics.
